The idea first came about to provide help and assistance for Former Players as a result of a discussion between two very close friends Derek Dougan the legendary Northern Ireland centre forward and former Chairman of the PFA and Bob Runham owner of a company that has produced some of the most sought after sporting prints depicting memorable moments in the history of Football Worldwide.
Bob was alarmed to find that a famous Scottish International could not afford a pair of shoes to attend a dinner in honour of his team’s achievements in becoming the first British team to lift the European Cup. The famous Celtic team of 1966 /67 season more famously known as “The Lisbon Lions”.
“The Doog” as he became known throughout the World of football simply commented “If only you knew the extent of the problem”.
Bob’s reply was “Surely there must be something that we can do?” Thus the idea of an organisation specifically set up to help former players was born.
Sadly “The Doog” passed away some month after and the idea never really got off the ground.
A group of former players got together and have ensured that the organisation prospers today.
